Why Choose Italy?

Italy is an excellent destination for Pakistani students seeking affordable and high-quality higher education in Europe. The country offers low tuition fees, especially at public universities where annual costs often range between €1,000 and €4,000, along with numerous scholarships such as the DSU Regional Scholarship and the Italian Government (MAECI) award, which can cover tuition, accommodation, and even living expenses. Italian universities like the University of Bologna, Sapienza University of Rome, and Politecnico di Milano are globally recognized for their academic excellence, particularly in fields such as engineering, architecture, business, design, and arts. Many programs are taught entirely in English, and students enjoy an international environment that is welcoming and culturally rich. Living costs are relatively affordable compared to Western Europe, typically between €600 and €900 per month, and the Italian student visa allows free travel across all Schengen countries. After graduation, international students can apply for a one-year job-seeking visa, giving them time to find employment in Italy or other EU countries.
However, there are also challenges to consider. The Italian language is widely used in daily life, so learning basic Italian is essential for communication, part-time work, and integration. Part-time job opportunities can be limited and often low-paying, especially for non-Italian speakers. Moreover, the country’s bureaucratic processes, including visa renewals and residence permits, can be slow and complicated. Post-study job prospects are not as strong as in countries like Germany or the UK due to Italy’s relatively high unemployment rate and economic constraints, particularly for non-EU students. Additionally, there are regional differences — northern Italy offers better industrial and educational opportunities than the southern regions.

Tips for International Students

  • Prepare All Original Documents
Keep your admission letter, visa, passport, educational transcripts, and accommodation proof safely in hand luggage. Make 2–3 photocopies of each and also store digital copies in your email or phone.
  • Arrange Initial Finances
Carry enough euros (€) in cash (around €1,000–€1,500) for your first month’s expenses — rent, food, transport, and university registration — since bank account setup may take time.
  • Book Temporary Accommodation
If your permanent housing isn’t confirmed, book a hostel or Airbnb for at least 10–15 days before arrival. This gives you time to search for long-term accommodation calmly.
  • Learn Basic Italian Phrases
Even though your course may be in English, learning basic Italian words for greetings, directions, and shopping will help you adjust faster and communicate easily.
  • Research Your City
Check transport options, supermarkets, Pakistani stores, and halal food spots near your university. Each city (like Milan, Rome, or Bologna) has different living costs and systems.
  • Pack Smartly
Bring weather-appropriate clothes — winters can be cold (especially in the north) — plus universal adapters, medicines, and cultural essentials you might not find easily in Italy.
  • Activate International Roaming or Get an Italian SIM
Stay connected with family when you arrive. You can get local SIMs like TIM, Vodafone, or WindTre at the airport or nearby stores.
  • Prepare for Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)
You must apply for this within 8 days of arrival at the post office. Bring passport copies, visa, admission letter, and health insurance ready for this step.
  • Get Health Insurance
Ensure your travel or student health insurance is valid for your entire stay or at least the first few months. You can later apply for Italy’s national health coverage (SSN).
  • Join Pakistani & Student Communities
Connect with Pakistani student groups on Facebook or WhatsApp for guidance on accommodation, documents, and local support. Networking helps a lot during your initial days.
