Germany student visa
UNIMENTOR2026-04-13T05:33:38+00:00

Germany is one of the most popular study destinations in Europe due to its affordable education and strong job market. If you are planning to study in Germany, it is important to understand the IELTS requirements, student work rules, and family (dependent) policies before applying for a visa.

1. IELTS Requirements for Germany Student Visa

Germany does not always require IELTS for the visa itself, but most universities require proof of English proficiency for English-taught programs.

The accepted test is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Minimum IELTS Scores

Bachelor’s Programs

  • Overall band score: 6.0 – 6.5
  • Minimum 5.5 in each module

Master’s Programs

  • Overall band score: 6.5 – 7.0
  • Some technical programs may accept 6.0

IELTS is valid for 2 years.

Can You Study in Germany Without IELTS?

Yes, in some cases:

  • If your previous education was in English
  • If you provide a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter
  • If the university confirms IELTS exemption

However, the German embassy may still request proof of English proficiency during the visa process.

2. Germany Student Work Permit Rules

Germany allows international students to work part-time during their studies.

During Studies

  • 120 full days OR 240 half days per year

  • Up to 20 hours per week during semester

  • Full-time work allowed during semester breaks

Students working more than the allowed limit must obtain special permission.

After Graduation

  • You can apply for an 18-month job-seeking residence permit

  • During this period, you can work full-time

  • Once you find a relevant job, you can apply for a work visa or EU Blue Card

Germany offers strong career opportunities, especially in engineering, IT, healthcare, and business fields.

3. Family (Dependent) Visa Policies

Germany allows students to bring close family members under certain conditions.

Who Can Apply?

  • Spouse

  • Minor children

Requirements

  • Proof of sufficient financial resources

  • Valid accommodation in Germany

  • Valid residence permit of the student

Spouse Work Rights

  • In most cases, spouses are allowed to work full-time without restriction.

However, approval depends on your residence permit type and financial situation.

4. Financial Requirement (Blocked Account)

Students must show proof of funds through a blocked account.

  • Required amount: Approximately €11,904 per year

  • This covers living expenses

  • Monthly withdrawal limit applies

This is mandatory for student visa approval.

5. Important Documents for Germany Student Visa

  • Valid passport

  • University admission letter

  • IELTS certificate (if required)

  • Blocked account confirmation

  • Health insurance

  • Academic documents

  • Visa application form

Conclusion

Germany offers affordable education, part-time work opportunities, and post-study career options. Understanding IELTS requirements, work permit rules, and family policies will help you prepare properly for your Germany student visa. Apply early, prepare complete documents, and make sure you meet financial and language requirements for a smooth visa process.
